The Plane of Gears

In the Outer Plane, adjacent and bound to Mechanus, is a place made up of millions of spinning gears and mechanical devices, all interlocked together, creating a plane that some consider to be a clockwork construct in and of itself. This demi-plane, as initially discovered by the Council Wizard, Elghinn Lightbringer, was given the name of the Plane of Gears. However, more accurately it is a demi-plane of Mechanus, drawing from the same energy pool found at the center of Mechanus, and from which the modrons are birthed.

The Plane of Gears is much like Mechanus, however the power of strict law and the bent towards the good is lessened. Primus, the god of modrons and the prime ruler of Mechanus, still rules over the Plane of Gears, but as it is a mere demi-plane, his influence is only felt when a great upset in what is lawful occurs.

Structure

The Plane of Gears consists of a single finite plane, composed of billions of turning cogs and interlocked components. The entire plane is thought to be as a giant sphere, with a great churning ball of energy at its core that is bound, if not entangled, with the Energy Pool of Mechanus.

This sphere is known to have a multitude of layers, each with their own particular set of physical or magical rules, and each governed by their own set of laws. Common to all, however, are the great clockwork factories where the inhabitants are created from, recycled back into, and recreated. Indeed, all the clockwork constructs of the Plane of Gears are in a constant state of recreation, with their old bodies and energies being broken down and changed into another form, for another purpose.

Magic within the Plane of Gears

Chaotic creatures cannot be summoned. Wild magic fails. Elemental magic requires a binding item, such as a blade of grass or drop of water act as an anchor.

Features

After the discovery of the Plane of Gears and initial contact with its inhabitants, it was found that those of the plane itself sought to expand and explore the planes around it. The very plane itself, it is said, began to direct the process of recreation to create exploration constructs and particular constructs, known as Reachers that could harness the power of the arcane to create planar portals and similar.

Inhabitants

Reachers

The Reachers were the first from the Plane of Gears to be created to utilize the arcane magics that Elghinn Lightbringer used to bring himself to the plane. The core of the planet sought to create these beings as a means to explore the planes, absorb knowledge, and expand its constructs to all it could reach.

The Reachers themselves have varied abilities in most arcane schools, but almost all specialize in conjuration and planar travel.

Ecology

Clockwork Mages

The discovery of the Plane of Gears by Elghinn Lightbringer birthed a new branch of summoning and eidolon research, culminating in those known as Clockwork Mages, powerful summoners who call forth clockwork constructs from the Plane of Gears to do their bidding.
